Replication: Understanding the Advantage of Atomic Broadcast over Quorum Systems
نویسندگان
چکیده
Quorum systems (introduced in the late seventies) and atomic broadcast (introduced later) are two techniques to manage replicated data. Despite of the fact that these two techniques are now well known, the advantage of atomic broadcast over quorum systems is not clearly understood. The paper explains exactly in what cases atomic broadcast is a better technique than quorum systems to handle replication.

Quorum-Based Replication in Asynchronous Crash-Recovery Distributed Systems (Research Note)
This paper describes a solution to the replica management problem in asynchronous distributed systems in which processes can crash and recover. Our solution is based on a Atomic Broadcast primitive which, in turn, is based on an underlying Consensus algorithm. The proposed technique makes a bridge between established results on Weighted Voting and recent results on the Consensus problem.
متن کاملAtomic Broadcast in Asynchronous Crash-Recovery Distributed Systems and Its Use in Quorum-Based Replication
Atomic Broadcast is a fundamental problem of distributed systems: It states that messages must be delivered in the same order to their destination processes. This paper describes a solution to this problem in asynchronous distributed systems in which processes can crash and recover. A Consensus-based solution to Atomic Broadcast problem has been designed by Chandra and Toueg for asynchronous di...
متن کاملReplicated Database Recovery Using Multicast Communication
Database replication with update-anywhere capability while maintaining global synchronization and isolation has long been thought impractical. Protocols have been proposed for distributed replicated databases that take advantage of atomic broadcast systems to simplify message passing and conflict resolution in hopes of making replication efficient. This paper presents global recovery algorithms...
متن کاملExploiting Atomic Broadcast in Replicated Databases
Database replication protocols have historically been built on top of distributed database systems, and have consequently been designed and implemented using distributed transactional mechanisms, such as atomic commitment. We argue in this paper that this approach is not always adequate to e ciently support database replication and that more suitable alternatives, such as atomic broadcast primi...
متن کاملBeyond 1-Safety and 2-Safety for Replicated Databases: Group-Safety
In this paper, we study the safety guarantees of group communicationbased database replication techniques. We show that there is a model mismatch between group communication and database, and because of this, classical group communication systems cannot be used to build 2-safe database replication. We propose a new group communication primitive called end-to-end atomic broadcast that solves the...
